What Has Happened to America? Can We Reclaim it?

American ChristianityYesterday’s Blog, concerning Obama’s speech to Planned Parenthood, where he asked God to bless an organization which, every year, ends the lives of 300,000 innocent unborn Americans, has really not set well with me.

I mean, it’s not that it was out of character for The Manchurian President, as much as the blase response from the Main Stream Media and all those Pookies on their couches, that seriously troubles my Christian American soul.

It troubles me to no end that, even though I know, in my heart of hearts, that there are plenty of average Americans who are just as upset over the dilapidated moral and fiscal condition of “the shining city on a hill” as I am, there are times when I feel like the little Dutch boy, with his finger in the dike, desperately trying to hold back the flood waters, which are about to destroy everything in its path.

I know that civilizations come and go. I am a student of history, and I have read about the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Their incredibly advanced governmental, military, and architectural legacy was eclipsed by situational ethics, immorality. and governmental corruption, caused by enemies foreign and domestic.

Sound familiar?

The United States of America has been one of the most noble undertakings in the history of mankind.

Our Founding Fathers came here to escape religious persecution. Not to get away from religion , as both Liberals, and their unwitting dupes, attempt to claim as truth.

John Adams, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and Second President of the United States said..

It is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue.

…We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. . . . Our constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.

Benjamin Franklin, signer of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence, said…

Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters.

I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth, that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid? Thomas Jefferson, signer of the Declaration of Independence and Third President of the United States, said…

So, how did we get to where we are?

Today 78% of Americans still believe that Jesus Christ is their personal Savior. You wouldn’t know that fact from exposure to our American Media, nor from following the anti-Christian actions of our present Administration.

I suppose that’s why Obama’s speech Friday morning shook me up so much. I had never, in my 54 years, seen an American President mock the God of Abraham in such a manner.

If Obama truly believes that Good blesses the killing of babies, he either partook of waaay too much “choom” with the gang in Hawaii during his Wonder years…or he is a very sick man, to be pitied.

Or…perhaps both.

The problem is….man is a fallen creature. There was only one Perfect Man. We all fall short of the Glory of God.

There will be no escape for America from this downward spiral we find ourselves in, without Revival in the Land.

Just as addicts, going through the 12-step program, are told to reach out for spiritual help, so should we, as a sovereign nation, bought with the sweat and blood of our fallen, who fought for an ideal much greater than themselves, so that this Blessed Land, UNDER GOD, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all, should not perish from the face of God’s green Earth, seek the help of the God of our Fathers, to reclaim The Promise that is America.

    My personal feeling is that the state of society is a reflection of the state of the church. While 78% of people may believe that Jesus Christ is their personal savior I’d say at least 50% of those live like the 22% who don’t. We have churches that deny the inerrancy of scripture, that don’t believe that Jesus is the ONLY way to be saved, that preach more about social justice and acceptance of all lifestyles than they do about our sin nature and the reason Christ was crucified, and are more concerned about how God can bless US, rather than how WE can bless God. To spend more than hour in a service is just too much for our fast paced, gotta have it now lives. I recently went back to my hometown in Montana. I had lunch with friends I grew up with and who still attend the church we went to as kids (a Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod: the conservative synod). One friend said she had talked to gentleman that records the sermon to be posted online later. He told her that, at the most, their pastor’s sermons run 8 minutes. He has 3 “bullet points” and offers a bit of commentary. The rest of the “hour” is spent on music and liturgy and he is very careful not to go over that hour (because some people might get upset because they’ve made plans). One of the guys I grew up with decided enough was enough and he and his family left the church. But he went and spoke to the pastor before he did and told him that he felt they were spending too much time trying to be Lutherans and not enough trying to be Christians. People in most other parts of the world are dying for their faith. They are meeting in secret to avoid arrest. They are being beaten and crucified and burned to death because they will not renounce their faith in Christ. But here in America we’re too afraid to be called homophobic or holier-than-thou to stand up to the sin we see permeating our culture. We’re compared to the Westboro Baptist Church cult if we make a stand, so we backdown from the fight and we just go along to get along. Until the Church stands up, begins to declare the truth of scripture again and takes it’s rightful place in society, we are only trying to put gold rings in a sow’s ear. Christ is more concerned about preserving His church and presenting her as His clean and spotless Bride than He is about trying to save America (though believe me, I pray He does both). So perhaps we need to lose it all to realize what we need to fight to get back and to finally stand up and do what we should have been doing all along.

  2. This column hits the nail on the head. I was talking about this to my best friend who is a history teacher & a Christian & what he said really gave me pause. He said America has a spiritual problem that cannot be fixed through politics. Spiritual revival is indeed needed & Christians & the church need to stop putting their hopes in The GOP, the courts, especially SCOTUS, & teach God’s Word as He wants it taught. I have attended church services that felt more like a GOP pep rally than a worship service. The GOP is not the answer. God is. As the years 2000 through 2006 proved just having a Republican controlled Congress & Presidency is not the answer. The GOP are every bit the problem the Democrats are. Both parties are fiscally irresponsible & the GOP is doing their damndest to join the Democrats on their level in terms of social irresponsibility. The church & Christians also need to refocus their fear from the world’s opinion of them to where it belongs: on God Himself. As for Barack Obama’s speech to Planned Parenthood, God will not bless sin, period. If he really believes He will he is lost & needs prayer, not pity. Everything is possible with God.
