The Shutdown: Of Parks, Presidents, Prayers, and a Puny Presser By a Petulant President

government shutdown rushmore cartoonSince the Government Shutdown started, a week ago last Monday, I’ve been sitting here thinking that the actions of The Manchurian President can not get any worse.

However, each day we go further into the shutdown, brings new revelations of this Administration’s mistreatment of American Citizens.

By now, I am sure you’ve heard about the group of Senior Citizens who were basically held captive by Park Rangers at the Yellowstone Park Hotel. The brown shirt-wearing Rangers would not let the Seasoned Citizens out of the Hotel to view the park, because of the Government Shutdown.

That’s right. It is now illegal to look at National Parks. The Head of the Regime has decreed it so.

And, while we are on the subject of our National Parks…

Nearly two dozen people have been issued citations for entering Grand Canyon National Park after a partial government shutdown forced its closure.

Grand Canyon Chief Ranger Bill Wright says some people have been caught at the South Rim, on trails, attempting rim-to-rim hikes or trying to sneak in through dirt roads.

All of the citations will be handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Wright says each of the 21 citations issued as of Monday has a mandatory order to appear in federal court.

A state highway that runs through the national park was closed after Grand Canyon officials found tourists removing barricades at overlooks along the road.

Wright says law enforcement will be patrolling the park around the clock. Most other park employees have been furloughed.

Evidently, this Land ain’t our land anymore. It’s Obama’s land.

President Teddy Roosevelt said in 1903,

There can be nothing in the world more beautiful than the Yosemite, the groves of the giant sequoias and redwoods, the Canyon of the Colorado, the Canyon of the Yellowstone, the Three Tetons; and our people should see to it that they are preserved for their children and their children’s children forever, with their majestic beauty all unmarred.

And, what’s equally as galling as Americans being arrested for wanting to see the Grand Canyon, is that fact that Obama opened our National Mall for a rally for people who are in our country illegally, saying that it was an exercise in “First Amendment Rights”.

Correct me if I’m wrong, boys and girls, but don’t OUR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS specifically apply to UNITED STATES CITIZENS?

And, isn’t one of the rights outlined in that Amendment, something about” limiting the free exercise” of religion?

Why, yes, I believe it is.

Then, considering the argument used for that rally on the National Mall yesterday, please…one of y’all explain this to me…

Apparently, a priest was denied access to a military chapel this weekend. Father Ray Leonard serves at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in Georgia but because of the government shutdown, he wasn’t allowed to go to celebrate Mass this past weekend.

He is contracted by the Defense Department to meet the spiritual needs of Catholics, but not now. The chapel doors were locked and the sign said, “Shutdown: No Catholic service till further notice.”

Father Leonard said the following:

“This is our church, Catholics have an expectation and obligation to attend Mass and we were told, ‘No you can’t go to church this week…“ My parishioners were upset. They were angry and dismayed. They couldn’t believe that in America they’d be denied access to Mass by the government.”

Rep. Tim Huelskamp had this reaction:

“Time and time again this Administration demonstrates it is waging a war against the very religious freedoms upon which America was founded. This is exactly why we worked to pass legislation (House Concurrent Resolution 58) this past weekend – to protect the religious liberties of all those who bravely serve in our Armed Forces.”

You know what gives me gas about this whole idiotic situation?

It’s the fact that the 44th President of the United States actually thought that Americans would cower in the face of his egregious mistreatment of us.

I mean, I’ve known all along that Obama has as much in common with average Americans like you and me, as Meghan McCain does with MENSA, however, the shear brazen despotism which he has shown to the very country he is supposed to be serving and protecting, is so unabashedly tyrannical, it makes Caligula look like St. Augustine.

The weapon Obama has chosen to attempt to reinforce this Government Shutdown is an old one: fear.

During his, at times, incoherent Presser, yesterday,Obama warned of “Economic Chaos” if his and Congress’ impasse does not allow our country to pay its bills. He proceeded to whine and say that he would settle for a short-term Debt Ceiling increase (instead of the unlimited ability to borrow and spend our nation into oblivion, as seems to be his wont).

On the Internet yesterday, Obama’s minions were spreading that same concern, stating that Boehner and the Republicans should accept whatever Obama offers them, and just go ahead and capitulate., because…get this…”we’re (Conservatives) losing”.

To which I reply,

“NUTS!”

One of the Liberals’ heroes, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, once told the nation,

The only thing we have to fear…is fear itself.

Truer words were never spoken. Those words are the perfect answer to Obama and his minions’ fear-mongering strategy.

Obama’s strategy is one born out of desperation. Americans are proving to be stronger than he had planned on.

We don’t tolerate tyranny very well. Never have.

While it was actually nothing but third-rate bloviating by a Petulant President, it was also very appropriate that Obama called out the Tea Party during his Press Conference, yesterday.

King George did not like the Tea Party, either.

    Egg pointed out the other day that there’s not enough wealth on earth to support doubling the debt again. We max within fifteen years, banging up against physics.

    I don’t think enough Americans appreciate the sheer immorality of this. Our money is gone. All the money we are going to make is already on the books. All the money our children are going to make is on the books. This “debt” is the money of other nations, other people, other people’s children – the bit of it that’s real. We’ve spent ours, and now we’re spending theirs, and shortly, within a generation, there will not be enough wealth, on earth, to support us.

    We should be ashamed. Or, for people in my state of mind, they should be ashamed.

    I still find this all very funny. I am sure President Obama called all these places and said, “Close these doors.” When he vetoed the debt ceiling bill, I’m sure he intended, oh wait, he wasn’t given one because Rep. Boner didn’t allow it to be voted on. He insists it won’t pass if voted on, but is unwilling to take that chance. The president can’t pass a bill or budget unless it gets to his desk. If parks and services are closed, then maybe a budget should be voted on. If it passes, great, if it fails, then it is up to the representatives (not the president) to iron out the details. The president can state that he will not pass if xyz are in the bill. The house and the senate can override that veto. Maybe we should start looking at why the budget hasn’t been voted on at all. Once he rejects the bill, then start blaming him.

        Yes there is an Executive Branch. The president has the right to pass or reject any bill sent to him. If the bill is not presented, there is little the president can do. If you will remember from 9th grade, if the president Veto’s a bill, the house and senate can override that veto. If you submit a cost saving measure to the president of your company and the senior manager never delivers it to the president of the company, do you blame the president of the company for not implementing it?

      2. Congress does not control the choices of what “Government” or, in the case of what Obama is doing, “Non-Government” services to shut down. 83% of the Government is still functioning. Obama has made the decisions he has, to punish Americans. He is the CEO of the nation. His is the final decision. And, he has decided not to negotiate.

        Actually Congress does decide on what bills and budgets get voted on. The president does not submit bills to Congress. If the Congress decides not to vote on a piece of legislation the president has no recourse. You are partially right in that the president has a decision to pass or reject legislation presented to him. It is not up to the president to negotiate on legislation that has not been voted on. It is also not up to the president to pick and choose what organizations are effected by a shutdown. You would have to look in to previous legislation that decided that. I could make the same argument that the Republican House leader will not allow a vote on the budget unless he gets his way and he is causing the American people to suffer because he doesn’t some piece of legislation that was already passed. Is that the way to change a law? Not vote on a budget until you get your way? If they want to put pressure on the president to do something, then maybe they should present him with a passed bill from the Senate and House and leave it up to him to pass or Veto. Last time I checked, the President doesn’t have a vote in House of Representatives?

        Late this morning, the President telephoned Speaker John Boehner from the Oval Office and repeated what he told him when they met at the White House last week: the President is willing to negotiate with Republicans — after the threat of government shutdown and default have been removed – over policies that Republicans think would strengthen the country. The President also repeated his willingness to negotiate on priorities that he has identified including policies that expand economic opportunity, support private sector job creation, enhance the competitiveness of American businesses, strengthen the Affordable Care Act and continue to reduce the nation’s deficit.

        The President urged the Speaker to hold a vote in the House of Representatives on the Senate-passed measure that would re-open the federal government immediately. Citing the Senate’s intention to pass a clean, yearlong extension of the debt limit this week, the President also pressed the Speaker to allow a timely up-or-down vote in the House to raise the debt limit with no ideological strings attached.

        Listen to what? Yes, the president can urge congress to act. Yes, the president can mediate between the parties. Yes, the president can threaten to Veto a bill. Yes, the Congress can override that Veto. Can the President force a vote? No. Can the President for a vote not to happen? No. What I see is debt ceiling bill in the house that the Speaker will not allow to be voted on. That vote is in control of 1 person, the Speaker. The vote itself is in the hands of both parties in the House. Yes, the president can advise and help negotiations but he can not make a bill pass the House. He can either accept the bill that gets to his desk or not. Since the bill is not presented, there isn’t much else he can do. The Speaker of the House is sitting on a bill until he get already passed legislation overturned. And at this time is allowing the shutdown to continue. If the bill had been presented and failed, then there would have to be some intense negotiations going on. The fact that he will not allow the bill to be voted on unless he gets his way is pretty pathetic. The president can not stop a bill if the majority of the House and Senate wish it. To say the President shut down the government when the bill to keep it open was not allowed to be voted on by the Speaker just doesn’t hold water. If the bill had been voted on and failed, it is still the failure of the Congress to come up with a bill that satisfies both parties. If the Congress passes a bill and the President Veto’s it causing the shutdown, then it is on him. Currently I would place blame on the Rep Boner for not allowing the bill to be voted on.

You just defeated your own argument, Skippy. “He can either accept the bill that gets to his desk or not.” If the House passes a bill, and the Democratically-controlled Senate defeats it, it will not make the President’s desk. Boehner does not HAVE to do a blessed thing. And, because he is not bowing to your messiah’s threats, your messiah is having a temper tantrum, and punishing Americans, both civilians and our Brightest and Best. Keeping blaming the Congress. No one is buying it. That’s why Obama’s approval rating is going down faster than the Titanic, as AP reported today, with it coming in at 37%.

        The Republicans don’t have to do anything, but stand their ground. They’re winning….and, you know it, hence your exercise in bloviation.

        It’s nice to see you agree with me that the Congress has to pass the bill before anything else can happen. Actually, neither side HAS to do anything. Jesus has very little to do with this process, when you are talking messiahs. Has Obama set a position on what he would accept? Yes. Does it mesh with the Republican House? No. Is there a compromise being worked on between the Senate and the House to get a bill passed? It doesn’t sound like it. Can Obama force legislators to vote his way? No. So, we go back to the Congress. The Congress has the right to pass legislation without the presidents approval, whining or not. Actually, if the president doesn’t sign or veto a bill it becomes a law over time. The president as stated, as you put above that he is willing to negotiate after we pay our bills. Boehner has said he will not allow a vote until he gets his way. That does not sound like negotiating. So, there isn’t a need to argue here, we both agree that Congress needs to draft a bill that will pass.

      8. NO. You are twisting what I said to meet your Liberal POV. The President is the leader of the Democratic Party. not Harry Reid. he is the arbitrer of their viewpoint. The Republicans, at this point, do not need to compromise. Obamacare is failing. Obama is coming off as a spoiled, petulant brat, and his approval numbers are dropping, due to his lack of leadership and propensity for taking punitive measures against the people he is supposed to be protecting and serving. Wake up and smell what you are shoveling.

        Once again we do agree. I do not believe Obama’s leadership has been stellar. It leaves a lot to be desired. From the vote perspective on the shut down, it is till basic civics that a bill has to pass Congress. Both side are acting like spoiled kids with no regard to how it effects the middle and lower class. This shutdown really should have nothing to do with the ACA. The ACA was voted on and passed the Senate and the House. (And yes, there are many pieced of legislation that were passed when the Republicans held both house and senate and the White House. Their repeals were not attached to any of the debt ceiling increases). It was challenged in the courts and upheld. It was then signed by the president. There have been over 40 attempts to repeal it that have failed. a last ditch effort was to attach it to the debt ceiling bill? So, if you can’t get something passed by normal means, attach it to something that hurts all of America if it doesn’t pass? I am not stating a position for or against the ACA. I am just saying it should not have been attached to this piece of legislation to try to force its repeal. If the ACA needs to be repealed or changed, then vote in the representatives to make that happen. That is the American way.

All of your protestations do not change that fact, nor the fact that the President is the Final Authority.   7. The argument that obamacare was passed and the SCOTUS upheld it as a TAX proves our point exactly.
    Just because a bad law is passed or a bad AMENDMENT was passed (prohibition) does NOT mean it has to stand.

    Just because the SCOTUS ruled it was legal as a tax, does not mean the american people have to live with it.

    Prohibition was repealed and that had a much larger hurdle to leap, a constitutional amendment.

    This is a bad tax that people never wanted and dont want. If it takes a govt shutdown to browbeat an ideologue to the table and do what the american people want, then i’m all for it.

    The House (and by default John Boehner) is most responsive and accountable to the people. The people DO NOT WANT OBAMACARE. They are doing the will of the people. The president is not.

    SO…..it is WELL WITHIN THE RIGHTS OF THE HOUSE TO REIGN IN THE POWER OF THE EXECUTIVE BRANCH. And I, for one, am glad someone is.
